“Wagner Doubles his Pleasure, Scores Second-Straight at Potomac”
By Doug Watson
Budds Creek, MD-
Defending track champion Tommy Wagner Jr. scored his second win in a row in last Friday nights 25-lap limited late model headliner at Potomac speedway.
Paul Cursey and Stevie Long brought the field down to the initial waving of the green flag. Cursey got the jump at the start and would lead the event for the first six circuits. Fifth starting Derrick Quade then entered the picture as he took the race lead from Cursey on lap-seven. Meanwhile, Wagner was surging forward from his 13th starting spot as he was scored second by lap-13. Wagner made the winning pass on lap-19 and would control the final 6-laps to post his second consecutive limited late model feature win.
“I can’t believe we came from 13th to win here tonight.” Wagner stated from Potomac’s victory lane. “There’s so many good cars in this class and I knew we’d have our hands full starting back as far as we did.” Wagner was quick to praise his car owners for his winning run. “Scott and Patty Thompson pay all the bills on this car and I cant thank them enough for allowing me to do this.” Kyle Lear rallied late to take second, Quade settled for third, Stevie Long took fourth and 17< SUP>th starting Louie Littlepage completed the top-five. Heats for the 17 cars on hand went to Paul Cursey and Stevie Long.
In the 16-lap street stock feature Kyle Nelson became the third different winner in the three-week old season. Nelson took the lead from Ben Bowie on lap-6 and would lead until Kurt Zimmerman took the top-spot on lap-13. Nelson would then re-assert himself as he would take the lead back on the 14th lap to score the win. Point leader Donnie Smith continued his streak of top-five’s as he would take second, 13th starting Kevin Cooke was third, Mike Reynolds was fourth and Kurt Zimmerman rounded out the top-five.
In other action, John Latham scored his second win of the season in the 15-lap hobby stock event, Defending champion Greg Gunter collected career win no.46 in the 15-lap four cylinder feature and Kyle Vantassel took the win in the 20-lap strictly stock main.
