By Doug Watson
Budds Creek, MD- Avenue Maryland’s David William capped-off a career season as he not only took his fourth win of the season in last Sunday night’s 44-lap Ronnie McBee Memorial, but he was also crowned the 2008 Potomac speedway late model track champion. Avenue Maryland’s David William capped-off a career season as he not only took his fourth win of the season in last Sunday night’s 44-lap Ronnie McBee Memorial, but he was also crowned the 2008 Potomac speedway late model track champion. Williams left little doubt he had the car to beat as he blasted from his pole starting spot to grab the top spot on lap one. From there on out it was a race for second the entire event. Third starting Steven Axtell Jr. held the second spot for much of the event until fifth starting Roy Deese Jr. slid by to take the spot on the 20th lap. Deese, Who was crowned the Hagerstown (MD) speedway late model champion on Saturday night, tried valiantly to unseat Williams from the lead, but Williams was not to be denied as he would take the checkered flag for his 22nd career Potomac late model feature win and his first-ever McBee memorial trophy. “This was a total team effort this season.” Williams stated from Potomac’s victory lane. “Jamie (Lathroum) really came on strong here at the end of the season and he made us work for it.” “I just want to thanks all my sponsors and all the guy’s on the crew they spent countless hours in the race shop this season and without them, we wouldn’t be here right now.” Steven Axtell Jr. scored a career best third place finish, Roland Mann was fourth and Ray Kable Jr. completed the top-five. Point contender Jamie Lathroum quietly finished the main seventh. Heats for the 22-cars on hand went to Scott Cross, Deese and Kable.

“Lear Over Davis in S.M.A.R.T Series Thriller at Potomac”
By Doug Watson
Budds Creek, MD- Severn Maryland’s Kyle Lear continued his late season heroics as he scored his third-straight 358 late model feature win in last Friday night’s 40-lap SMART Series event at Potomac speedway Courtesy of: Vera's Beach Club Restaurant & Marina, Three Mules Welding Supply's and Cameron Construction.
Derrick Quade and Allan Brannon brought the 26-car starting field down to the initial waving of the green flag. Brannon blasted into the race lead from his second starting spot and appeared to have the car to beat as he led the events first 24 circuits. While Brannon was leading, third starting Kyle Lear made his way to second by the 4th lap. Unfortunately Brannon’s brilliant run came to a halt as mechanical problems ended his night while leading on the 24th lap. Lear was in the right place at the right time as he would be scored the leader on lap-25. Even though Lear would eventually score the win, things got quite interesting behind him.
Jamie Lathroum, who spun earlier in the event and was forced to the rear, was on the move. Lathroum charged through the field to enter the top-five by the 25th lap. Lathroum then took the lead from Lear on lap-36. However, Lathroum’s chance at a dramatic victory came to an end as he spun while leading on lap-38. Once again Kyle Lear was in the right place as he held off the advances of Gerald Davis, who also came from the rear, to post the biggest win of his career and his sixth overall win of 2008.
“Alla n (Brannon) had a really good car and I’m not sure if we would have been able to get by him.” An elated Kyle Lear stated from Potomac’s victory lane. “We had a good starting spot tonight and I’m glad we were able to win it, this is really big for us.” Nineteenth -starting Greg Roberson was third, Ed Pope drove a great race for fourth and Ronald Cusic completed the top-five. Heats for the stellar 31-car field went to Brannon, Lear, Quade and Gerald Davis with Tommy Wagner Jr. winning the consolation.
In the 16-lap street stock feature it was Kurt Zimmerman who posted his fourth feature win of the season. Zimmerman started the event from the pole and would eventually lead every lap.
